A $250,000 donation from the state's largest cellular provider is supporting Mississippi State University's scholarship program.
Cellular South has pledged $50,000 a year for five years to establish the Cellular South Accounting Scholarship Fund and the Cellular South Computer Science Scholarship Fund. The firm's gift will be equally divided between the two funds.
"Mississippi State is grateful for this commitment from Cellular South," said MSU President Malcolm Portera. "Support of our scholarship program is critical to ensuring that we continue to attract and educate the leaders of tomorrow, and, as a leading university, building partnerships with Mississippi companies is important to our future."
Beginning with the 1999 fall semester, Cellular South scholarships will be awarded to state residents majoring in accounting and computer science.
"We think the scholarships will benefit Mississippi State by continuing to attract quality students and individuals," said John Redmond of Columbus, Cellular South's area manager. "We view this donation as a gift to the university and an investment in the future."
Currently serving 42 Mississippi counties, Cellular South received the 1996 Mississippi Quality Award for Excellence. The company has 44 retail locations around the state.
