A reception for a student art exhibition will help usher in a special musical concert Nov. 21 at Mississippi State University.

The Joel Futterman-Kidd Jordan Trio, featuring Alvin Fielder, will give a free public performance at 8 p.m. in Lee Hall auditorium. The group's selections combine African-American improvisations with jazz and blues.

Preceding the concert will be the two-hour reception for a fine arts thesis exhibition of works by seniors Chad Anderson of Starkville and Jason Greene of Clinton, both graduating next month. Also open to all, the social begins at 6 p.m. in the Department of Art Gallery, located on the bottom floor of McComas Hall.

Anderson, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Larry Anderson, is a 1992 Starkville High School graduate. Greene, a 1993 Clinton High graduate, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn R. Greene.

Titled "Play," their exhibition is being presented Nov. 17-Dec. 5 in the McComas gallery. The collection of paintings and drawings revolves around their ideas on diversionary activities.

Anderson's expressions involve a series of large-scale self-portraits. Greene's ideas are portrayed through toys and the situations and relationships he creates between them.

The connected events evolved from the two students' backgrounds as both musicians and visual artists. The trio whose music will conclude the Friday evening's activities include drummer Alvin Fielder, a Jackson pharmacist originally from Meridian; pianist Joel Futterman, a Virginia Beach, Va., school teacher; and saxophonist Edward "Kidd" Jordan, director of bands and jazz studies at Southern University in New Orleans.

The concert is co-sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences Colloquium Committee and the university's Office of Research. Other sponsors include the University Honors Program, Holmes Cultural Diversity Center, Department of Art Visiting Artists Committee, and campus radio station WMSV-FM.
