Professor receives international honor

A Mississippi State University professor is a new Fellow of the Society for Industrial Microbiology.

Lewis Brown of biological sciences has been a member of the international society for more than three decades. During this time, he has led various committees of the Fairfax, Va.-based organization. He earlier was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology.

The society is a professional organization dedicated to the advancement of the microbiological sciences as they apply to industrial products, biotechnology, materials, and processes.

During his 36-year tenure at Mississippi State, Brown has served as major professor for 35 master's and doctoral students, and written more than 100 scientific publications. His research has focused on environmental and petroleum microbiology, including microbial enhanced oil recovery.

Earlier this year, he became the first faculty member to receive the university's Ralph E. Powe Memorial Research Award. The honor is named for the school's long-time research vice president who died last year.

Brown holds bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from Louisiana State University. He also is a member of Sigma Xi research honor society and the American Society for Microbiology.
