More than $1 million worth of new parking lot and street construction is scheduled to begin next spring at Mississippi State University.
Approved last week by the state Board of Trustees, Institutions of Higher Learning, plans call for a 320-vehicle parking lot adjacent to the Joe Frank Sanderson Recreation Center now under construction. Also authorized is an extension of the lot northeast of Humphrey Coliseum, which will accommodate another 300 cars.
The $800,000 combined cost of the projects is to be financed by bonds issued by the university's Educational Building Corp.
The board also approved construction plans for a new 550-ft. connector road linking University Drive at the Highway 12 overpass to Barr Avenue, a major east-west campus street. A $297,000 project funded by legislative appropriations, the new connector should relieve some traffic congestion at the Five Points intersection near Scott Field.
