The Mississippi State University student chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers is the nation's best.
The 70-member organization received the 1996-97 Outstanding Student Chapter Award at the recent national ASID conference in Seattle, Wash. One of more than 230 chapters nationwide, the Mississippi State group also took the Best Newsletter Award.
The university's accredited interior design program is a part of the School of Human Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Associate professor Margaret Bateman of Starkville directs the program. Assistant professor Beth Miller of Louisville is chapter adviser.
Selection for the national award is based on community service activities, involvement with local professional chapters and group accomplishments, among other things.
The Mississippi State chapter has been involved with the Birdhouse Auction fund-raising program of the Mississippi Association of ASID and the Greater Jackson Habitat for Humanity. Members also are active with the Starkville Humane Society, Oktibbeha County Adopt-A-Family Program and SafeHaven of Columbus.
Leading the organization last year were Cristi C. Moore of Starkville, president; Amy E. Eifling of Tupelo, vice president; Brandy K. Sobley of Columbus, secretary; Michelle M. Lyons of Snellville, Ga., treasurer; Allison G. Noone of Jackson [33 Avery Circle, 39211] and Angelle M. Brignac of Starkville, public relations coordinators; and Kelly B. Smith of Iuka, membership chair.
Jennifer L. Cordogan of Germantown, Tenn., and Marsha L. Daniels of Pearl were newsletter coordinators.
All were seniors last year but Smith, who was a junior.
