A Mississippi State University art professor is the only artist from Northeast Mississippi selected for the 1997 Mississippi Invitational at the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson.

Marita Gootee will have her photographic transfer work displayed in the exhibition, juried by New York-based artist Nina Felshin. The exhibition will remain open until July 6.

"This is a fine indication of Marita's national profile as a photographer being appreciated at home," said Brent Funderburk, art department head.

Gootee is exhibiting two series consisting of three Polaroid transfers. One series is figurative and the other relates to family memories.

The Mississippi Invitational is an inaugural exhibition of 17 of Mississippi's most significant contemporary artists.

Mississippi Chemical Corp. is underwriting the production of the exhibition's illustrated catalog, which is available through the Mississippi Museum of Art, 201 East Pascagoula St.
