'Gypsy' opens this week

.--"Everything's Coming Up Roses," "Together Wherever We Go" and other classics highlight a four-day run of "Gypsy" this week at Mississippi State University.

Performances Thursday through Saturday (April 17-19) begin at 7:30 p.m. in McComas Theater. The Sunday (April 20) matinee opens at 3 p.m.

Tickets are $8 for general admission; $6 for students and senior citizens.

Produced by the departments of communication and music education, the Jule Styne-Stephen Sondheim musical is a perennial favorite that has seen a number of Broadway revivals, including a 1974 version that earned actress Angela Lansbury a Tony Award.

Starkville Community Theater actress Madeline Golden portrays stage mother Gypsy Rose Lee, a role originally made famous by Ethel Merman. Mississippi State sophomore Amy K. Hargrave of Jackson and senior Kathy S. Sayle of Germantown, Tenn., take the roles of her daughters. Senior Corey M. McKern of Pelham, Ala., plays Rose's agent.

The cast also includes more than 30 other members of the campus and Starkville community.

Communication instructor Terri Holland directs the production, assisted by music education professor Douglas McConnell, also the music director. Junior Cletus D. Collum of Booneville is assistant director.

Choreography is provided by Debby Funderburk, a lecturer in physical education, health education and recreation. Assistant communication professor Wayne Durst is set designer.
