Administrator earns national award

The associate director of Mississippi State University's cooperative education program is receiving national recognition for his work with the American Society of Engineering Education.

J. Mike Mathews of West Point recently was presented the Alvah K. Borman Award in recognition of "meritorious contributions" in the fields of engineering and engineering technology. A $500 honorarium accompanied the plaque presented by the ASEE's Cooperative Education Division.

He served as division chair in 1993-94 and was general conference chair for the 1997 national meeting. He also helped lead in the completion and implementation of the organization's new strategic planning program.

"Mike is always willing to work behind the scenes to get the job done," said Mary Gordon Pawlawski, former CED chair. "His emphasis is on the team, not any individual efforts."

Mathews, a 21-year Mississippi State employee, also is an assistant professor of cooperative programs. He has been a consultant to the U.S. Department of Education and the Southeastern Training Center for Cooperative Education.

He holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Mississippi State.
