The co-author of a book about achieving women administrators will be keynote speaker April 2 at Mississippi State University.
Sandra Lee Gupton of Hattiesburg will address the second Jayne A. Burrows Sargent Leadership Award presentation sponsored by the educational leadership department in cooperation with the university President's Commission on the Status of Women. The 3 p.m. public program will be held at the Engineering Research Center, which is located in the Mississippi Research and Technology Park that adjoins campus north of U.S. Highway 82.
For 30 minutes prior to the program, she will be available to sign copies of "Highly Successful Women Administrators: The Inside Story of How They Got There."
"The first 40 individuals attending the conference will receive free copies of Dr. Gupton's book," said department head Ned Lovell.
Using 15 examples within the 224-page publication, Gupton and Gloria A. Slick, both University of Southern Mississippi faculty members, explore issues confronting female administrators. They suggest ways to become comfortable with pursuing power, to use a "participatory" leadership style and to develop networking and mentoring skills, among others.
"Highly Successful Women" is published by Corwin Press Inc. of Thousand Oaks, Calif.
The awards program also is supported by Mississippi Power Corp., the American Association of University Women and the Jackson Educational Management Program.
