A specialist on Japan's evolving role in world economics will speak Tuesday (March 4) in a public program at Mississippi State University.

"Regime Shift: Japanese Politics in a Changing World Economy" will be the topic of remarks by T.J. Pempel at 10 a.m. in the Rogers Auditorium of McCool Hall. Pempel is Boeing Professor of International Studies at the University of Washington.

His campus visit is being coordinated by Mississippi State's Center for International Security and Strategic Studies.

"Dr. Pempel's remarks will focus on Japan's move from a domestically based exporter to a more truly internationalized set of firms with heavy overseas investments," said center director Ronald Aqua.

Aqua said Pempel also is making visits to the University of Memphis and Tougaloo College while in the region.

A Columbia University graduate, Pempel is the author of eight books and several dozen articles. Before coming to the University of Washington, he led the East Asia Program at Cornell University.
