West Point school district honors late educator

A special commemoration to the late Lucinda "Cindy" Rose, the Mississippi State University associate professor of curriculum and instruction who died suddenly last year, now is a part of the West Point School District.

To honor her long service in teacher education, the district recently named in her memory a classroom-preparation work room at South Side Elementary. The Rose Room will be used by all student teachers assigned to the West Point system.

Rose, who died of an aneurysm in October, was director of the College of Education's senior block field experience--more commonly known as the student teaching program for graduating education majors. She was teaching a morning class in Allen Hall when stricken.

While Rose had a close relationship with teachers and administrators around the state, she had developed a special relationship with the education professionals in West Point.

At the Jan. 22 dedication ceremony, a bronze plaque outside the door was unveiled by Rose's husband, Vince McGrath, an associate professor of curriculum and instruction at Mississippi State. Joining in the unveiling were assistant district superintendent Alma Turner and school principal Percy Bryant.

Members of the College of Education faculty also presented a framed portrait of the late educator to hang in the room.

A West Virginia native who joined the faculty in 1989, Rose held degrees from the University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University.
