'Virtual classroom' offers national course

In a course to be taught entirely on the World Wide Web and by electronic mail, students at Mississippi State University and a variety of other U.S. locations can learn classical ideas that have shaped the modern mind.

Scheduled for the spring semester, "History of Ideas Online" explores the ideas of space that transformed the 16th and 17th centuries.

Students will read works by poet John Donne, astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, philosopher and mathematician Wilhelm Leibnitz, and dramatist Christopher Marlowe, among others. Class discussions will be conducted by electronic mail.

The pre-registration deadline is Dec. 20; final registration is Jan. 10.

Teachers include Lynn Holt of Mississippi State's philosophy and religion department, along with English instructors Steven Shelburn at Shreveport-based Centenary College of Louisiana and Bruce Avery of San Francisco State University.

While any person from anywhere may register for the course, enrollment for credit at Mississippi State first requires admittance to the university.
