Known as a "musician's musician," pianist and composer Fred Hersch brings a program of multi-dimensional jazz to Mississippi State University Nov. 12.
An honors graduate of the New England Conservatory, he now serves as piano instructor in the jazz studies department at the Boston school. He also is a faculty member of the New School/Mannes College of Music.
The 7:30 p.m. performance in Lee Hall Auditorium is part of the university's 1996 Lyceum Series. Tickets are $6 for adults; $4, senior citizens (by request); and $3, children 3-12.
A prolific performer at U.S. and European jazz venues and festivals, Hersch has recorded 13 albums and has participated in more than 75 recording projects as a soloist, arranger or producer.
His interpretation of classic standards, "Dancing in the Dark," was a 1993 Grammy nominee for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance. A 1995 solo offering, "I Never Told You: Fred Hersch Plays Johnny Mandel," earned a second individual Grammy nominee for best jazz instrumental performance.
Among additional recordings are "Point in Time," "Red Square Blue," "Forward Motion," and "Evanescence: A Tribute to Bill Evans."
