A program of music to be featured at the Carnegie Hall debut of two Mississippi State University musicians will first be performed on the university campus.
Lana Johns and Joel Harrison, the Johns-Harrison Duo, will present a preview performance of contemporary American and Czech music in an Oct. 3 (Thursday) performance in McComas Theater.
The 7:30 p.m. recital will feature selections they will play in an Oct. 12 concert at New York's premier concert hall.
Tickets are $5 for the general public and $3 for faculty, staff and students.
The music education professors have performed as the Johns-Harrison Duo since 1992. Last year, they represented Mississippi in a concert commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. They also have performed in Germany, as well as in a variety of United States locations.
Their program is derived from extensive research in the formerly communist Czech Republic. Some selections have never been performed in the United States.
Among program selections: "American Sonatina," written for the duo by Czech composer Jindrich Feld; "Sonata," also by Feld; "Sonatina for Flute and Piano," by Petr Eben; "Partita for Flute and Piano" by Eduard Drizga; and "Sonata for Piano and Flute" by American composer Lowell Liebermann.
