Change and technical education will be the focus of a highly specialized June 2-7 training program at Mississippi State University.
"Technical Educators as Change Agents" is the formal theme. Among the various sessions will be programs on optical technology, designing classrooms of the future, performance-based outcomes, virtual reality, and the Internet.
Nearly 50 participants and presenters from 20 community colleges, industries and state departments of education in more than a dozen states are registered for the annual campus event.
The National Institute for Technology Training, a part of the university's Division of Continuing Education, is sponsor and host. Established in 1991 with support from the Tennessee Valley Authority, the NITT is a cooperative effort between higher education, business, industry, and government to enhance instructional and technical capabilities of vocational, technical and community college faculty and staff.
Educational institutes and training programs operate today "in an environment of rapid change never seen before," said NITT director Bill Smith.
"To be successful, institutions and their faculties and staffs must reach beyond their local communities to understand the global changes under way," the associate dean of continuing education added. "This program provides that opportunity."
To date, more than 250 participants from nearly two dozen states have attended the annual summer program, which leads to one- or two-year certificates or a three-year diploma.
