Bassidi Koné Jembe Workshop

November 05, 2016 - 10:00 am

About this event

Beginner to professional musicians are encouraged to participate in this hands-on jembe workshop led by percussionist Bassidi Koné. Bassidi Koné is of Bwa ethnicity and hails from the Segou region in Mali. Born into a Griot family, Koné grew up beside his father’s instrument, the balafon (a traditional, wooden xylophone), instilling in him his forefathers' traditional village songs and rhythms. After moving to Bamako at thirteen, Koné met Koninba Bagayogo, a meeting that profoundly influenced his musical career as a percussionist. Playing alongside this master djembe player, the young Koné extended his knowledge and skill, distinguishing himself through his innovative solo lead playing and technical virtuosity. Come take advantage of this unique opportunity to experience the rich drumming culture of Mali without having to even get on a plane! The event is sponsored by MSU's Department of Music and the LINK Centre in Tupelo.
