Kids and Guns: Why They Do It

Dr. David C. May, a nationally recognized researcher and authority on school violence, will discuss \"Kids and Guns: Why They Do IT\" on Thursday, April 3 at 2:00 pm in the Mitchell Memorial Library Auditorium. Dr. May is a Professor and Kentucky Center for School Safety Research Fellow in the Department of Safety, Security, and Emergency Management at Eastern Kentucky University. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology with emphasis in Criminology from Mississippi State University in 1997. He has published numerous articles in the areas of responses to school violence, perceptions of the severity of correctional punishments, adolescent fear of crime and weapon possession, and two books examining the antecedents of gun ownership and possession among male delinquents. He is currently coauthoring a book on foster care in the United States and a book on perceptions of the punitiveness of prison and working on several articles related to the aforementioned topics. Dr. May received the EKU National Alumni Association\'s 2007 Award for Teaching Excellence. In his spare time, he coaches his three children in youth sports and serves as a Cubmaster in his two sons\' Cub Scout pack.
